The pneumatic cylinder, also was called as Air cylinder, pneumatic actuators ,air actuator and so on. They were widely used in the automation system, CNC machine ,food machinery,Textile machinery etc.

A typical pneumatic cylinder must include the vital important part, that’s the piston, the compressed air were injected and push the piston move forward,used to provide linear or rotary motion and force to automated systems.

For the normal cylinder, the piston is fixed with the rod , when the piston is pushed by the compressed air, the rod moving togetherly , it stretches out, or draw back to push a object,or draw back a object.

How many types pneumatic cylinders there are,and where to find it?

With the decades of development of the pneumatic technology, the engineers had created more than ten types of pneumatic cylinders.

Now we introduce the most frequently-used pneumatic cylinder or pneumatic actuator.

1.Profile & Tie-Rod Cylinders or Actuator

The most commonly standard cylinder in industrial automation system and are high performing, long lasting and with the requested viton seal are able to operate in high temperatures.They provide linear motion,and most of them are double acting.

Because these two cylinders are the most commonly used, we also call them”standard cylinders”. Most types standard cylinder have adjustable cushioning. It’s a important characteristic for the heavy duty work situation.This allows the heavy objects which pushed by the air cylinder will not cause damage to the cylinder or the equipment due to the inertia when it moves to the end of the stroke.

AIRTAC SU Profile Air Cylinder Bore Size 32 To 320mm Double Acting.

It is NO tie rod cylinder. The cylinder barrel is “Mickey Mouse” Shape, Aluminum Alloy Material, good anti-corrosion performance. Compared with ISO15552 standard cylinder, SU series is shorter in the same stroke status. Adjustable buffer design insure the cylinder suiting for different load level.

2.Mini cylinder ,Sub-Miniature Cylinder, Micro air cylinder

This kinds of cylinders are ideally suited to lighter duties and in lower force applications compared with standard cylinders, and are available as single acting or double acting.Micro-Air Cylinders are ideal for small part positioning, clamping, and ejecting. They are the perfect choice for appplications where small bore, medium duty, repairable cylinders are preferred. And they are suitable for operations without externally applied lubrication.

Mini cylinder,Micro air cylinder,Sub-Miniature cylinders have the same structural features as standard cylinders, which are also composed of caps, piston and rod, cylinder barrels, and seals. Mini cylinders also function in two ways: double-acting or single-acting. Just their dimension is small.

What is the Mini cylinder

Mini cylinder be with the same structural features as standard cylinders, could be double-acting or single-acting. Just their dimension is smaller than the profile cylinders. But bigger than the Sub-Miniature cylinder and Micro cylinder. And most of the mini cylinder are with round barrel.

3.Compact Cylinders or Actuator:

Compact air cylinder offers highly engineered, reliable and innovative solutions with thesmallest footprint to force ratio, for a wide variety of industrial applications, especially for automation equipment that requires high space utilization, and small tooling.

It’s featured a compact design for applications where cylinder length is critical. The

self-lubricating nitrile piston seal increases cylinder performance and provides the best actuator life expectancy. An integral slots for flush mounting of sensor switch.

What is the compact cylinder?

Compact cylinders have the same structural features as standard cylinders, which are composed of end caps, pistons, cylinder barrels, and seals. Piston rod cylinders function in two ways: double-acting and single-acting. Double-acting cylinders use compressed air to power both the extend and the retract stroke (moving the rod back and forth). This arrangement makes double-acting cylinders ideal for pushing and pulling loads. Just their dimension is smaller. Compared to ISO Profile cylinders, their dimension is reduced by 60%. But it can have the same bore and force output. Most of their stroke are not too long due to the space request. The original intention of this kind of cylinder is to reduce the space occupied. The reason of choosing this kind of cylinder is that the automation designer have to save space.

3. What's The Guided Cylinder

The guided cylinder is composed of a guide rod or slider parallel to the piston rod and the cylinder as a whole, or a cylinder is composed of two parallel pistons and piston rods. In the double-piston rod cylinder, the heads of the two piston rods are mounted by a flange, which prevents the rotation of the piston and obtain double output force at the same time.

This cylinder has a compact structure, high guiding accuracy, and can withstand large lateral loads and moment of force. It can be used to withdraw, lift and position the work piece on the conveyor line.

For the guide rod, normally there are two types rail bearings, one is the sliding bearing and ball shaft. The sliding bearing type has good abrasion resistance and can withstand lateral load more than 2 times larger than that of the stopper cylinder. It is suitable for use as a stopper. The ball bearing type can make high-precision smooth movement, has a long life, and is suitable for moving and lifting work pieces on the conveyor belt.

AIRTAC type TN series dual rod cylinder with the compact design, and two piston rod design double the output force. It has two sides installation choice and with four magnet switch slot. SMC type MGP guide rod cylinder is designed for high side load applications found in material handling, lifting and stopping. The cylinder utilizes an ultra-compact design by incorporating the cylinder body as part of the guide body. As the stroke length increases, so does the bearing length, thus enhancing the cylinder’s load bearing capacity. Order made options for this series include adjustable air cushions, heavy duty guide rods, copper free, high temperature, and low speed.

SMC type MGG guide cylinder integrates a round body cylinder for its power source with external guide rods to isolate the load bearing from the movement of the actuator’s rod and seals for a compact and light weight unit. The stroke adjustment (up to 50 mm) can be either on the extend or retract cycle. It is enhanced with shock absorbers at the end of stroke for maximum kinetic energy absorption. Non-rotating accuracy ranging from +/-0.02° for 100 mm bore to +/-0.07° for 20 mm bore.

Pneumatic slide cylinder or slide table cylinder

Slide cylinder refers to a cylinder with precise guiding, bracing and driving functions, also known as a guiding drive device. Generally, it integrates a standard cylinder and a guiding device, adopts a modular structure design, and uses a standard connecting plate to combine different types and specifications of sliding table into X-Y axis coordinates or X-Y-Z three-axis coordinate motion.

The sliding table cylinder is guided by a ball bearing, and a magnetic ring is installed on the piston,which could be inducted by the sensor switch.Normally set a hydraulic shock absorber at the end of the stroke to reduce the vibration.
The slide table cylinder has the characteristics of high guiding accuracy, torque resistance, strong load capacity, stable work, simple and convenient assembly, and is widely used in detection, grasping, feeding, positioning, assembly and machining in pneumatic automation systems. It can be used as the body of the pneumatic manipulator, the driving device of the arm, the mechanical sliding table, etc.

4. Pneumatic rotary actuator or pneumatic rotary cylinder

The typical rotary cylinder is a device that converts a double-acting linear motion or a single acting linear motion to the rotary motion. It was called as pneumatic rotary actuator or rotary cylinder.

Pneumatic rotary actuators are highly reliable, efficient and safe sources of motion control that use pressurized air to convert energy into rotary motion. They’re especially appropriate for the repeated opening and closing of valves and other industrial applications where the use of electricity may cause a fire or ignition hazard.   It effectively turns the valve into a remote-controlled valve from a centralized control point. Common valves, like butterfly or ball valves, only require ¼ of a circle to open/close. Therefore, the motion on the actuator is restricted for movement between 0 and 90-degrees. A common design of a pneumatic rotary actuator with a quarter turn.
Pneumatic rotary actuators have several different names, including pneumatic rotary cylinders, air rotary cylinders and air rotary actuators. Each of these terms is synonymous with the other, as they all identify the device as air pressure based.

SMC type CRB2 vane drove rotary actuator is a very light weight rotation power

source which is suitable for transport the smart and light weight parts. There are basic type and flange type design for the convenient installation. For the rotating force consideration, there are two vanes style and one vane style for choice.

5. What's The Rodless Cylinder

A rodless cylinder is a pneumatic device capable of moving a load in a linear path

with compressed air. But the load moves directly with the piston through a link block thatmoves with the piston.
When the stroke of the cylinder is overlong, the use of a cylinder with a piston rod easily causes the piston rod to bend and deform. Therefore, a piston ess cylinder is oftenused to solve this problem. The occasions where travel and installation space are restricted; for example, pushing in and moving work pieces, opening and closing of mechanisms, lifting of objects, door control, and material conveyance.

They do not have the cylinder piston rods as ordinary cylinders, but use the pistons to directly or indirectly connect the internal actuators, and then the pistons perform directlyor indirectly to realize linear motion of the objects. This kind of cylinder has the biggest advantages of simple structure and saving installation space, and is especially suitable for the occasions of small stroke and long stroke.

Selection consideration
The following criteria should be considered while selecting a rodless cylinder:
Stroke speed: This is the speed at which the piston moves within the cylinder. This would depend upon the air pressure supplied at each port and the load.
Carrier Load: The carrier must be able to support and move the mounted load safely and efficiently and align the rod axis with the load and direction of movement when connecting Dead length: Ensure sufficient space for installing maintenance activities.
Stoke: Use the product within the limits of the maximum usable stroke. The piston rod will be damaged if operated beyond the maximum stroke.
Air pressure: As the piston is driven my compressed air, there must availability of constant air pressure, and filtered air supply.
Bore Size: Bore size can be chosen according to the capacity range required for the application. For a cylinder to perform at maximum capacity, larger bore size should be considered.

SMC type CY3B rodless Cylinder – It’s a basic type magnetically coupled cylinder. Adopt industrial strength magnets located in the piston and external carriage to form a single unit that will travel when actuated with air pressure. The CY3B series has resin based lube retainers installed on the dust seal to more evenly distribute lubricant for a reduction in minimum operating pressure. 70% longer wear rings will distribute a side load over a larger contact area for improved bearing performance. Please note the CY3B must be used with an external guide to support the load.

SMC type CY1S rodless Cylinder-magnetically coupled style. The cylinder assembled with the cylinder guide and the external shock absorber. Lube-retainers are mounted on the internal and external surfaces of the cylinder tube to maintain lubrication. – The adjustment bolt improves stroke accuracy/repeatability.

SMC type CY1L rodless Cylinder-magnetically coupled style, can be used in many diverse environments. Loads and moments are possible through the use of integrated guides. A variety of guides can be used to achieve the necessary accuracy or allowable moment needed for your application.

6. Pneumatic grippers and pneumatic clamps.

What’s the gripper?

In a short, grippers are devices that drived by the pneumatic,electric,or hydraulic power to actuate the jaws clamping or slackening to pick up or place down a objects .The grippers sometimes are designed just like human hands, complete with five fingers,four fingers, two and three fingers, most of the grippers shaped like claws.

What’s the pneumatic gripper ?

It’s a type of gripper which the jaws or fingers were actuated by the pneumatic cylinder. The cylinder consists of a piston and rod moving inside a closed barrel, designed to move in a straight line to deliver linear motion. And it is drived by compressed air. The jaws or fingers were assembled on the cylinder piston rod by  gear device or the lever structures.When the cylinder rod is pushed to contract or extend, the fingers are opened or clamped to grasp the object.

SMC type MHT2 toggle gripper cylinders with its newly designed cylinder body, allows small auto switches to be mounted on 4 surfaces. When the gripper fingers are

closed, the toggle mechanism is actuated to produce a strong and stable holding force. This toggle mechanism will hold, even when air pressure drops. The MHT2 is easy to maintain, and all external parts are treated to resist corrosion. Threaded mounting holes in the grippers body and finger housing allow a variety of mounting positions.

SMC type MHW2 gripper cylinder is ideal for applications where saving space is a

necessity. In addition to its compact size, each one of the two fingers, synchronized bya rack and pinion, rotates back perpendicular to the gripper. In this position, the

MHW2 will only require clearance for the body. While the fingers are retracted at a 180-degree angle, the gripper can be moved in an X-Y plane to the work.
